Nov. 29, 2008- Too many times has a talented player been labeled as having "it," without "it" being clearly defined.

Phoenix Xavier Prep junior setter Stephanie Preach has shown for some time now that she has "it." And for Preach, "it" - as Xavier coach Tim McHale can explain - is the "wow factor."

"There are things she does all the time that practically amaze me," McHale said. "There are some things she pulls out in practice that I think 'How did you do that?' " <read article>

November 7, 2008-One of Brother Joe Schwab's aims as executive director of the Franciscan Renewal Center, commonly called the Casa, has been to get people to better appreciate the work and mission of St. Francis of Assisi and the labors and ministry of his religious order, the Franciscans.
Too often, Schwab said, folks think of the 13th-century ascetic saint as the humble animal-friendly friar who is part of a birdbath in a front yard.
"There is so much more than that to St. Francis and the Franciscan tradition than a birdbath," he said.
Now after 30 years in the Franciscan Order, Brother Joe is about to become Father Joe.
On Nov. 29, Bishop Thomas Olmsted, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, will ordain Schwab as a priest at St. Mary's Basilica in Phoenix where other Franciscan friars are assigned as key staff. "It's not common for us" to take that step to ordination to the priesthood, Schwab said. "It happens sometimes." <read story>

GROUNDBREAKING SET FOR NATIONAL CANCER SHRINE TOMORROW
St. Peregrine Chapel at Christ the King Parish, Mesa

MESA, AZ (November 14, 2008) The Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix, will participate in a groundbreaking for a chapel and shrine devoted to supporting people affected by cancer at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, on the grounds of Christ the King Catholic Parish, 1551 E. Dana Ave., Mesa.

Prior to the ceremony, Chuck Lenhart, store manager of an ACE Hardware store in Mesa, will walk from the Diocese of Phoenix Pastoral Center, 400 E. Monroe St., Phoenix, to the site of the groundbreaking to honor all of those who have died of cancer as well as those who are still fighting the disease.  He will begin his walk at noon and is expected to travel down Van Buren Street in Phoenix until it curves into Mill Avenue in Tempe and take that eventually to Apache Boulevard in Tempe, and finally Main Street in Mesa.

Lenhart is scheduled to arrive at the Parish just before a candlelight groundbreaking program that will include luminarias in the outline of the chapel.  The chapel will be named the St. Peregrine Chapel in honor of the patron saint of cancer patients.  A shrine to St. Peregrine will also be a part of the chapel.  Construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2009.

The only one of its kind in Arizona, the chapel will feature a healing garden, perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a bronze statue of St. Peregrine, cancer-related resource material and prayer services.  It will also serve as the new headquarters for the Healing Through the Body of Christ (HTBC) Cancer Ministry – an outreach program in partnership with the American Cancer Society.  Volunteers from HTBC, which is recognized by the Diocese of Phoenix, will offer one-on-one support, cancer information, educational programs, and community outreach.
