Awards are available to all 8th grade students who attend either public or Catholic elementary school. The single criterion is service: Christ-centered behavior evidenced through voluntary service. Since 2001, 57 students have received awards totaling $456,000. Recipients are awarded $8,000 ($2,000 per year for 4 years) for tuition to a Catholic high school in the Diocese of Phoenix.
To be eligible, students must be in the 8th grade during the 2006-2007 school year. The award reflects students’ service activities in three areas: church, school and community. Students must be nominated by an adult who is aware of their service activity. Family members are not eligible to make nominations. Nomination Forms are available at www.ccfphx.org and must be postmarked by October 1, 2006.
Once nominated, students are invited to apply. Application forms are also available on the website. Applicant must submit three letters of reference and prepare an essay no more than 500 words on what this scripture statement means to you: “You are the light of the world. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14,16. Applications and materials must be postmarked by November 1, 2006.
Originally created in 1998 as the Reverend Philip J. Poirier Memorial Fund, the award was established with Fr. Poirier’s gift from his personal estate plan along with gifts given in his memory. In 2001 the name was changed to the Christian Service Award Program. The program now includes the generosity of many contributors who have established perpetual funds through the Foundation.
The Catholic Community Foundation was founded in 1983 and is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated “To carry on the work of Christ by fostering philanthropy.” CCF provides permanent endowment and memorial funds for donors interested in furthering Catholic education, communication and Christian formation in the Diocese of Phoenix.
