The Catholic Sun Newspaper: Leaders in the Catholic Press

Second Place for Best Feature Writing: "Amid desert dangers, humanitarian group works to save lives," by J.D. Long-García.
J.D. Long-García writes about a fascinating and little-known occupation — people who come to the rescue of dying immigrants attempting to cross the border. These people don't sit in judgment; they help.

Joyce Coronel's columns are about the full banquet of life, encompassing fear, joy, love, respect, wisdom, courage and most of all faith.

The Catholic Sun is notable for its use of strong color photos, teamed with pleasing designs and writing that often reaches out beyond the routine. Notable examples: "Diary of a South American Adventure," and stories of Katrina survivors. Lots of letters to the editor and other local opinion show that the Sun is well connected with its community.

Catholic Communication Campaign Collection May 21
Donate to help continue our live TV Mass
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 18) – “After the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and then Hurricane Rita, we at the Catholic Communication Campaign thought of how we could support dioceses which have been the support of the CCC over the years,” noted Msgr. Francis J. Maniscalco, Director of the U. S. Bishops Department of Communications, which oversees the CCC. “We sought a way to help them maintain and rebuild their communication ministries.”
Last fall, CCC’s Committee on Communications, chaired by Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas, authorized grants totaling $650,000 for affected dioceses, to help them rebuild their communication ministries. The Diocese of Lake Charles, La. reported that the grant money helped offset operational expenses of the communications office. The monies also allowed the diocese to place full page ads in several secular newspapers which provided information on relief efforts to families impacted by the storms.
“The Catholic Communication Campaign is not only there in times of national disaster. The CCC and our diocesan communicators with the support of our diocesan bishops and parish priests and the generosity of the people in the pews, are developing programming and using the newest technological means to deliver the Gospel message according to an individual’s preferences,” Msgr. Maniscalco noted. “Today anyone, anywhere, at any time of the day or night, can choose to spend some time with our Lord, enriching his or her personal relationship with God. Beginning this year, the CCC will offer pod casts of its programming, to make the Good News eveneasier to find and enjoy. And we’ve just concluded our first ever Good News Art Contest. Sixteen hundred children in grades one thru sixth grades shared their visions of how Jesus would spread the Good News today.”
For more than twenty-five years, the annual Catholic Communication Campaign collection has supported a variety of Catholic programming both nationally and locally.
The CCC collection will be taken up in most parishes the weekend of May 20-21.
Half the collection remains in the local diocese for its own communications efforts while half supports the activities of the national CCC Office.
Among the programs supported by the CCC nationally, radio has proved to be a cost effective means of engaging people of all ages. Six radio programs are produced and distributed by the CCC to dioceses across the country- and they are also available on the
Internet. “The Lenten Radio Series” premiered during this Lenten season. Produced by Franciscan Radio and the CCC, it is a series of half-hour radio Lenten “retreats.” Each
program, available in English and Spanish, features sacred music, a homily from a bishop, a prayer, a blessing, and an informal discussion about a Lenten theme based on
the Sunday Gospel of the week. CCC launched a companion web site to provide additional educational materials for the weekly retreats.
Programming appearing on the affiliates of national networks includes:
- "Jesus Decoded" will be offered to NBC-TV affiliates for broadcast
beginning in May --just in time for the release of "The DaVinci
Code," based on the popular novel. "Jesus Decoded"--filmed in
Turkey, Italy, Israel, and the United States--dispels the novel's
fiction with scholarly fact. The CCC has also created a colorful
16-page brochure, "The Authentic Jesus" and a bulletin insert, both
great for parish use. Go to www.jesusdecoded.com to learn more!
- “Faith Works II: Across the U.S.A.” aired on ABC-TV affiliates in October 2005
as part of the “Vision & Values” series. It examines “typical” days in the lives of
several Catholics as they live out their faith.
- “Picturing Mary” is an examination of the portrayal of Mary in art through the
ages due to air in December. CCC will unveil a companion web site for viewers in the fall.
Locally in the Diocese of Phoenix we produce the televised Sunday Mass ‘live’ from Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, broadcast on KUTP/Phoenix 45 and Cox and Qwest cable channel 9. It is only through your generous donations and those of the homebound viewers that make this television ministry possible for shut-ins.
Two other projects that we are working on are the web site and pod-casting. The website is a dynamic form of communication that is ever changing. Your generous donations help to maintain the web with current information using the latest technologies. One of those technologies we are developing is pod-casting where we will produce audio shows available for everyone to listen to through the website or portable audio players. These shows will feature church leaders, clergy and lay people of local and national interest.
These are worthwhile and exciting endeavors that the Diocese of Phoenix has for all to access – TV Mass, website and pod-casting. Please take advantage of these communication ministries.
The latest information about CCC is available to bishops, pastors, and parishioners on its Web site, www.CatholicCommunicationCampaign.org.
Visitors to this site will find information on communication activities in various dioceses, program scheduling, the collection date for their diocese, the CCC’s quarterly bulletin insert, View in the Pew, as well as reviews of current films and videos, Mass times, streaming video of featured programming or coverage of important news conferences or meetings of the bishops’ conference.
The Web site also includes materials to assist diocesan communicators and parish priests in their efforts to promote the collection.
“The CCC is How the Good News Gets Around. In today’s world, individuals are desperately seeking messages of hope. The CCC is continually working to produce positive messages. In addition, we are utilizing the latest technology to make programming available on demand, to as many listeners and viewers as possible,” Msgr. Maniscalco said.
The Catholic Communication Campaign is an activity of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that develops media programming, public service announcements, and other resources to promote Gospel values. Donations of Catholic parishioners to the annual collection make possible the work of the CCC.
Viewer Comments:
Dear Mary Jo West and Becky Gonzales,
We so appreciate this T.V. Mass, from our Cathedral, each Sunday Morning. Vicar Robert Clements, Pastor is so reverent and his homilies are superb.
Please accept this $50.00 money order donation for the continuation of the T.V. Mass on U.P.N. Channel 45. My husband and I are very grateful for the privilege of being able to view the Mass, broadcast on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. God bless you in all you are doing for the diocese. With prayers, Theresa
Pray for my daughter Norine going for chemo. I love Fr. Clements on Sunday Mass with his nice stories. Love, Louise
Just want you to know how much I enjoy Fr. Clement’s homily. He’s excellent. Thank you for the Mass. Sincerely, Violet
I am an avid watcher of the T.V. Mass each Sunday. Thank you for still making it possible for shut ins to go to Mass. Enclosed is my donation. Sincerely
You have my deepest thanks for the TV Mass being shown each Sunday. The Eucharistic Minister from St. Jerome’s brings Holy communion to me each week. My cup runneth over. However, after view the mass faithfully for over a year, I still have a feeling of guilt for not attending the mass in person in church. It is very hard to shake. I am an 83 year old shut-in. My deepest thanks.
Thank you! At 9:00 am on Sunday you are heard and seen very clearly in our living room. Sincerely
Pray for the soul of my departed husband, also for my health. Thank you!
We would like to thank you for your precious T.V. Mass which airs on Sunday morning cable 9 at 9:00 a.m. Both my wife and I are disabled and we are unable to make it to Sunday Mass and receive Holy Communion. We are so grateful to be able to watch mass and participate in the Sunday morning services. The Lord has truly bless us with your programming. We would like to know if it is possible for someone from the church to be able to deliver the Holy Eucharist to our home so we may receive Holy communion on Sundays. Enclosed is our tithing so the TV Mass is able to continue to air for all those souls that are in a similar situation as ourselves. We would be so grateful to be able to receive Holy Communion. Please contact us regarding Holy Communion. Thank you so very much. God Bless you and Ss. Simon 7 Jude for airing the Sunday Morning Mass. A response would be a great blessing. God Bless you. (St. Jerome Parish was contacted and they are now getting Communion at home).
